
"The Roof of the World" so called because it is the highest plateau in the world and is an extraordinary destination and journey. The average altitude is 12,000 ft (4,000 m). There are 2.5 million sq. kilometers. This a place where people of all faiths go to experience this most sacred place and meditate or circumambulate what is known in Tibetan Buddhism as the center of the universe. Like the rest of the Himalaya, it is the people and culture that is the most memorable and rich experience of the tour.
Tibet is surrounded by mountain ranges including the Himalya to the South, Ladakh and Karakoram Mountains to the West, and Ladakh and Tang La Ranges to the North. There is a gap in the East ranges where three rivers flow which are the main rivers flowing through Asia and source in Tibet. Mt. Everest (Chomolunma in Tibetan/Sherpa language) shares it's land with both Tibet and Nepal and can be reached from either side. These rivers are called Indus, Brahmaputra and Yangtse.
Tibet is one of the oldest civilizations known; over 5,000 years. They are known to be compassionate, tranquil and determined people who are deeply passionate in their peaceful religion of Tibetan Buddhism.
The capital city Lhasa is full of life and has many sites to see such as the Potala Palace, monasteries, temples, and street markets. The surrounding holy lakes and mountains are sacred to Tibetans and have a profound effect on people who visit them. This ancient land and culture offers many historical sites and museums, mountain biking and trekking. Your view of the world and yourself will never be the same after spending time in Tibet and the surrounding area.
