TREKS/TOURS CURRENT AND HISTORICAL INFORMATION PLANNING TRIP

"The Roof of the World" so called because it is the highest plateau in the world and is an extraordinary destination and journey. The average altitude is 4,000 m. There are 2.5 million sq. kilometers and it is said that 75% of this land is uninhabitable because of its extreme climate. Because of this, it is a worthwhile journey and a place where people of all faiths go to experience a meditative state and the splendor of the land and people. Tibet is surrounded by mountain ranges including the Himalya to the South, Ladakh and Karakoram Mountains to the West, and Ladakh and Tang La Ranges to the North. Everest can be seen and reached from Tibet as well as Nepal. There is a small gap in the East where three rivers flow which are the main rivers flowing through Asia and source in Tibet. These rivers are called Indus, Brahmaputra and Yangtse.

Tibet is one of the oldest civilizations known; over 5,000 years. They are known to be compassionate, tranquil and determined people who are deep seated in their peaceful religion of Tibetan Buddhism.

In 1951, the world was just beginning to discover Tibet when a tragic event took place. The Chinese government attacked, killed and arrested many of the peaceful and unarmed Tibetan people. They occupied and closed it off until the 1980's. Many of those arrested were imprisoned for many years simply for demonstrating against their occupation. Some of them are still in prison to this day simply for demonstrating against the oppression, including women. Many of the rest of the people were exiled including their spiritual leader, His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama, who was forced into exile to India after occupation as well as tens of thousands of other Tibetans. Several important, ancient monuments have also been destroyed and communist policies have transformed cities as they have tried to annihilate their traditional culture. In spite of all this, the Tibetan people have preserved their culture as much as possible and this area is one of the most beautiful, serene and interesting places in the world to visit.

The Dalai Lama has been an important world figure since his birth, and has traveled the world in pursuit of world peace and freedom for his country and people. He won a Nobel Peace Prize and continues his work today as millions of people follow and admire him. His biggest wish, and life work is for his people and country to be free one day from the oppressive Chinese regime and world peace (non-violent solutions to world problems). He also would like that travelers will become informed of the situation there and respect their traditional culture while visiting by preserving it.

The capital city Lhasa is full of life and has many sites to see such as the Potala Palace, monasteries, temples, and street markets. The surrounding holy lakes and mountains are sacred to Tibetans and have a profound effect on people who visit them. This ancient land and culture offers many historical sites and museums, mountain biking and trekking. Your view of the world and yourself will never be the same after spending time in Tibet and the surrounding area.

Our Spiritual Tour takes you through Tibet where you can experience meditations and teachings with a Lama Yula in the serene beauty of the mountains and vast open spaces. We will visit monasteries and temples as well and pray there. This is absolutely a life changing experience not to be forgotten.

Cultural Tour (Nepal & Tibet)
Customized Tour

PLANNING FOR TRAVEL TO TIBET-There are flights into Lhasa only and we will arrange for ground travel throughout the rest of your trip as there are no internal flights. The prime season is October through December (it gets dark by 4 or 4:30 in December). Trekking is excellent in October after the monsoon rains have died out. January through March is very quiet on the trails but much colder. April through June is warmer but hazier for views just before the monsoon rains come.

All nationalities need a visa valid for at least 6 months after completion of travel dates. Nearly all nationalities for Nepal obtain a visa in their country of origin in advance. The can also come from customs at the Nepalese border, but we recommend getting them in advance). There are no longer 15 & 30 day visas. All tourists must get a 60 day visa ($US30). It is possible to apply for a single, double or multiple day entry to Tibet for an extra $25US, $40US, $60US respectively. These are obtained from the Nepalese Embassy abroad or at the International airport upon arrival. A 60 day visa can be extended for 30 days for an extra $50US. It is important that visitors traveling to Tibet through Nepal obtain an entry visa for $25 to avoid the $50US re-entry fee into Nepal.

Participants must realize that they are traveling to a country that has different standards and practices; therefore flexibility for weather as well as flight delays are possible. We are not responsible for weather related delays or other unforeseeable cancellations that are out of our control; understanding this is key to everyone having the most pleasant experience possible. One should allow for a few days extra in case of unexpected circumstances of this sort.

Safety is most important to us which is why one of the guides on each tour/trek has medical and rescue training.

Culture Tour in the Kingdom of Nepal- Fly into Bangkok for a night and see the city that truly never sleeps. The next day you will land in Kathmandu, where one of our guides will pick you up from the airport and take you to your hotel. You will have a day or two to explore the many sites to see in this ancient city including the street markets, temples, museums, and dances or festivals. Next you will trek to the Sherpa village Taksindu at the base of the Himalayas where you will stay with Karma Sherpa's family in their house for two days.

Then the mountain trek begins into one of the highest and most spectacular mountain ranges in the world. With a view of Everest and many other sacred and unclimbed peaks, lakes and glaciers, you will trek several hours per day while the porters carry the equipment for you. In the morning, our Sherpa guides will wake you with a hot cup of chai and will prepare breakfast while you dress for your day of hiking. You will visit monasteries, a jungle safari, villages and farms. For the intermediate trekker, the historical Everest base camp interests some and has awesome views of the peak. There are several options for treks in the region depending on the fitness level and length of time each group has to spend (see itineraries section for more details). A party with Sherpa families in the village will conclude your trek.
